THE LASER

The acronym LASER carries its own definition - Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation – which in terms of quantum physics, describes the mechanism by which a solid, liquid or gas medium is encouraged to emit coherent light.

When considered as an industrial tool, the CO2 laser is better viewed as a beam of light that, when focused to a fine point, provides heat energy which is intense enough to melt and vaporise metal and other materials. This energy can be controlled to provide surface treatment, fine seam welding or line cutting.

APPLICATION OF THE TECHNOLOGY

Laser cutting machines can accurately produce and replicate complex contours. The laser beam is typically 0.2 mm diameter at the cutting surface and the speed and depth of cut is determined by the output energy and quality of beam emitted by the light resonator. Typically, a 2500watt laser can cut cleanly through 15mm mild steel, 10mm stainless steel, or 3mm aluminium sheet.

Our Lasers are best suited to materials such as carbon steel or stainless steels and are also capable of cutting other metals such as aluminium, titanium and pre-coated steels. However, metals such as copper and copper alloys are far more difficult to cut due to their light reflective and heat conductive properties.

ECONOMY OF SCALE

The combination of laser profiling and other CNC processes is becoming common place in a broad spectrum of industrial applications, most notably where heavy metal sections with complex features require further work such as welding, grinding, milling and tapping.

The rapid profiling speeds, quality of finish and efficient use of materials that is achieved with the modern CO2 laser provides a highly cost-effective solution to the demands of modern industry. This technology can provide you with a new flexibility to compete in today’s “just in time” environment and the ability to tackle the more complex engineering projects of the future.
